There has been a debate in my mind for a very long time about the best college to be in...and the names that come to your head are irrevocably presidency ,St.xaviers college and Jadavpur.well i was no exception until recently.world today is all 'bout your career and bank balance. And to have a sparkling one you have to have a good education background from a very good college!!!We finish our high schools in kolkata with the hope of getting into one of those colleges which people always talk about and which would earn us respect just by its name.but sad thing is that these colleges don't have enough seats for us all.(damn!!!i used to think.if u know ur college is the bast then why don't u increase your seats?)...but that's life!!!!meanwhile the admission lists in all colleges come out and you finally realize that your name is hardly on any first list of the star colleges.scratch hardly...it ain't there!!!the world with all the education centers seem ruthless and unkind in your eyes and the only song you can remember is "yeh kya hua..."And as if this weren't enough your inquisitive relatives and some of your "friends" keep ringing you up to know about which college you gotta go to.by the time the first week passes you are left hopeless and wonder if your going to get a higher education inspite of getting a 60 or 70percent in your boards.ultimately the b grade colleges decide to take you in.
The first day i went to the college was by far the worst.it was nothing like i expected.(expectations were pretty high thanks to our very own bollywood movies)i felt like a stranger in the room surrounded by people i didn't know...n didn't want to know either.first week passes painfully.it seemed as though the teachers didn't care if we even attended the class or not.the first monday of the second week saw me late for my first class with the HOD.but i needn't worry cuz apparently the motto of college was "the less ,the better".i sat beside a girl who kept dozing off.and the one beside her kept poking her and talking to get her to wake up.she seemed pretty energetic considering the lecture that was boring enough to put the whole city into a deep slumber.she asked what my name was.
"it's Debanjana ",was my curt reply.
"I'm soumi and this is samanta"she said.
then she started talking animatedly of how boring the teacher was and how early we had to wake up for this torture....and after a awhile the bell rang.the class seemed to have ended quite fast.i wondered .n the entire day seemed to pass away really fast.the girl dozing off, samanta was quite a talker too i realized.the week turner into months n we got closer and the repulsive college seemed most inviting to us.one day while talking to a friend who got into one of the star colleges i realized that if i had been to one of those colleges filled with intellectuals and high profile people i would have missed out on all of this.i would have missed out on the magic that friendship can be that keeps the power of transforming the soggy streets to sunny gardens.
Over the phone she asked me"how come you enjoy college?"
i thought for a while and said,"i have friends in it".
